PillCam capsule endoscopy from Medtronic uses an ingestible, single-use capsule containing a miniature camera, light source, battery and transmitter. As it passes through the digestive tract it captures images of the mucosa, which are recorded and then reviewed on dedicated software.

PillCam is a capsule-endoscopy platform from Medtronic. It is used to obtain a visual record of the gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa — most commonly the small bowel, a region that is difficult to examine fully with conventional upper endoscopy or colonoscopy.
How does capsule endoscopy work?
The patient swallows a single-use capsule that contains one or more miniature cameras, a light source, a battery and a wireless transmitter. As natural motility carries the capsule along the digestive tract, it captures images that are transmitted to a recorder worn by the patient. Afterwards, the images are downloaded and reviewed by a clinician on dedicated reading software, and the capsule is passed naturally.
What is it used for?
- Investigation of the small bowel — for example in obscure or suspected small-bowel bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia work-up, and suspected or known small-bowel inflammatory disease
- Visualisation of GI segments where a non-invasive first-line look is preferred
Patient selection and safety
Capsule endoscopy has contraindications and precautions — including known or suspected GI obstruction, strictures or fistulae, swallowing disorders, and considerations for patients with implanted electromedical devices. Patient selection, preparation and any use of a patency capsule must follow the current instructions for use and local protocols. It is a visualisation tool; it does not allow biopsy or therapeutic intervention.

Is capsule endoscopy uncomfortable?
Swallowing the capsule does not require sedation, and most patients continue their normal day while the recorder is worn. Preparation (for example bowel preparation and fasting) follows local protocol.
What part of the gut does PillCam examine?
It is used mainly to visualise the small bowel, which is difficult to reach with standard upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. Different PillCam products target different GI segments.
Can tissue samples be taken during capsule endoscopy?
No. Capsule endoscopy is a visualisation tool only. If a biopsy or treatment is needed, a conventional or device-assisted endoscopy is arranged.
Who should not have capsule endoscopy?
It is contraindicated or used with caution in patients with known or suspected GI obstruction, strictures or fistulae, swallowing disorders, and in certain patients with implanted electromedical devices. Selection follows the current instructions for use.
What happens to the capsule afterwards?
It is single-use and is passed naturally in a bowel movement. It does not need to be retrieved.
